Our fireplace chimney is leaking and on the other side of the wall , which is in my daughters bedroom, there is black mold growing on the wall. The wall is painted but it is coming thru the paint. The same thing is happening on the ceiling as well. Im very afraid of this situation as i’ve heard so many horror stories of how black mold can kill a person. I have taken my daughter out of the room since i found this. I would have already tried to fix it but we rent this house and we have to inform our landlord about this. Can anyone help?
Within the past year I’ve removed over 11,000 sq. ft. of drywall corrupted by black mold caused by flooding due to Florida hurricanes.
Certainly you shoud be concerned, as it can cause respritory problems at the very least.
No matter what anyone else tells you, I offer this. No amount of bleaching, or anti mold soultions will work for the long term. The leak needs to be addressed. The problem needs to be solved, or even in replacing drywall, black mold can return.
With painted drywall, the mold is actually attacking the paper that contains the gypsum compound, and then extends out, onto the paint. If you cross section a piece of drywall, you’ll notice the Gypsum is unneffected.
Certainly Black Mold is a natural occurance, but accepting it’s existence is not.
Steps I’d take immediately would be bleach solution spray, rubber gloves, probably a paper DUST mask, and clean up what is obvious. In the process have the leak issues found and solved. Also in that process,,, like it or not,,, remove as much of the drywall extending from the infected area as you can, and replace it.
I’m not a "medical" doctor, but I do know what concerns Black mold can,,,and should cause.

Your landlord should rectify the problem. In the meantime, try to increase ventilation in the room and light. Paint won't stop it.References :
Please have the landlord fix it and if they wont, you must report it. This is serious. I lived in a home with my children for over 10 years that had serious mold problems that the landlady would not fix. Because of this myself and children developed serious allergies and asthma. That have affected us and will the rest of our lives. Do yourself a favor. The landlord is required to take care of that. If not, they can be fined and be also not allowed to rent the place out till it is fixed. Lots of repercussions to them. This is a health violation. If nothing is done, you must move out. Use a respirator (like one used for spraypainting) Bleech will kill the mould and you can also get mould retardent paints.References :
