You might initially feel disgust, frustration or even a sense of being overwhelmed. Placing the home up for sale might be the first thing that pops into your mind, but that should be a last resort.

Mold is part of the natural environment. Outdoors, mold plays a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Mold reproduces by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air.

Many people actually live in a home with mold and never realize it’s there. They ignore the warning signs until the problem reaches a point where the mold is taking over and affecting their health. Therefore, it is important to be aware of what the signs are that you may be sharing your home with more than just your family.

A mold outbreak over the summer at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., destroyed thousands of dollars worth of Marines’ personal property, and those with rooms in the affected barracks say problems persist despite abatement efforts.

Trouble surfaced in July after work crews completed a months-long project to install new air conditioning at barracks buildings 929, 930 and 931, which were built in 1975 and now house 104 Marines, according to Marine officials at Parris Island and the Pentagon, which issued a joint response to questions about the mold outbreak. Some pipes weren’t properly insulated, causing condensation to form, and because fan settings weren’t properly calibrated, rooms cooled too quickly without sufficiently clearing the air of moisture.

Mold took root on walls, doors, ceilings and inside lockers, according to three drill instructors with rooms in the barracks. They spoke to Marine Corps Times on the condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to speak to the media. Photos reviewed by Marine Corps Times support their claims. Apart from DIs, other residents of the barracks include personnel assigned as base support staff. Mold ruined several uniform items, the Marines said, and at least one piece of furniture, an upholstered La-Z-Boy reclining chair. Residents have cleaned the mold repeatedly, but it keeps growing back, they said.

Read more about Marines fighting mold problem at Parris Island at: MarineCorpsTimes.com

While mold spores are usually harmless to humans and can be found even in the tidiest of homes, an overwhelming indoor colony can cause illness. The most common ailments are mild allergic reactions, such as itchy eyes, skin irritation or respiratory symptoms like a dry cough, and nasal and sinus congestion. Mold can grow in the body, however, and that can lead to serious infections. Some types of mold produce dangerous chemicals, called mycotoxins, that can lead to memory problems, mood changes and fever.

You may want to use an air purifier to minimize the airborne particulate, which allows mold spores to disperse to other areas of the home/house or building. The quicker you address the problem, the less extensive the damage will be since it may only take 24-48 hours for toxic mold to germinate and grow. Prompt remediation of contaminated areas and materials should be the primary response to water intrusion and indoor fungal growth.

The most important way to prevent indoor mold from becoming a problem again is to control the moisture in your home or building. In order to control moisture, you need to be able to monitor it. Monitoring the relative humidity is one of the most important means of knowing whether you have excessive moisture levels. Ignoring the warning signs that you may have mold only prolongs the problems you will experience. Be aggressive in locating the source of the mold and addressing it.

In your home and basement, a musty smell will let you know that mold has set-up house! Mold can grow on many things, including: tile, grout, wood, paint, plaster, and fabric.

Although molds often originate in basements because of the dampness, spores can spread through the rest of your home. Mold spores that are set adrift in your home will find an appropriate place to live and grow, like bathrooms and kitchens which contain adequate food and moisture.

So why is mold in the news with stories of exhorbitant litigation, serious respiratory illness, asthma, cancer, and the contamination of buildings so damaged they required extensive mold remediation or demolition?

Some Antigo residents will have a rough Christmas. And their new year will not start off well either — they may find themselves homeless. Several residents in the Forest Ave Mobile Home Court have mold in their trailers. Some of the trailers have been condemned by the Langlade County Health Department. Residents have thirty days to get out and find a new place to live.

The mold is just the tip of the iceberg. And other residents agreed with Tiegs — they say Bouche has not helped with their other issues. Kerry Riley-Weber said she had an issue with her electrical box that Bouche should have paid for because it was off her property. ”The whole thing cost me $200 because Randy would not pay for his responsibility,” she said. The manager at another trailer park Bouche owns in Kronenwetter also has her frustrations.

Residents say they’ve had their share of plumbing issues as well. While we were there, one resident discovered her pipes had frozen. Tiegs said the trailer park is also dangerous. ”It’s full of ice here all the time…you can fall…there’s elderly people here,” she explained. These residents say Mr. Bouche should take responsibilty for the issues. However, Mr. Bouche had no comment.

Whether some molds are more dangerous than others is just one of the questions researchers like Dr. David Zhang, a research biologist at New York’s Mt. Sinai Medical Center, are trying to answer. There are more than 100,000 mold species, and about 50 are considered toxic. He has invented a DNA-based technology that spotlights the bad ones.

Scientists and doctors do agree on one thing: about one in three people can have allergic reactions to mold. For asthma sufferers who are very young, like Caitlin, or elderly, mold can trigger much more serious problems. Knowledge is power, and we do have the power to protect our homes and families against the dangers of toxic mold as long as we take some simple precautions.

Clean-up any mold mou find – If you find a patch of mold in your home that is small, less than three feet square, clean it with bleach and water, letting it dry thoroughly. If any larger mold areas are found, contact a toxic mold expert to conduct a professional black mold test.

There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed.

It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors. Children are especially vulnerable to toxic mold. Their immune systems are not yet fully developed; they have sensitive skin; and their organs are not yet mature enough to filter out toxins.

Toxic mold in classrooms and school buildings can trigger manyhealth problems, such mold asthma and mold allergies in many children, as well as skin rashes, headaches, dizziness, and possibly even learning disabilities. Unfortunately, the first signs of mold contamination in a school building might be the medical symptoms of those who work and attend classes there.

Something seemed to be growing inside a first-grade classroom at Middle Township Elementary School No. 1. And it wasn’t the 6-year-olds who sit at the desks. According to parents, a serious mold problem seemed to inhabit the classroom. Toys, glue sticks, and even the American flag, new in September, had mold growing on it, said classroom parents.

According to school Superintendent Michael Kopakowski, “We did have reports that something was going on. We’re not sure if it was HVAC-related or not.” In the meantime, the school custodial staff found themselves at school on Sat., Dec. 3. Not so fast, say some parents. According to them, there’s a mold problem in the building. Kopakowski said having a mold problem this late in the year is very unusual. He said that normally, mold problems occur in the heat and humidity of August, when the school is shut up tight.

When the Herald called Cape May County Health Department, it was told that mold problems are investigated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Every classroom in the school has been outfitted with a portable dehumidifier, said the employee. Photographs provided to the Herald show mold growing in a classroom dehumidifier.

Read more about School Mold Concerns Irk Middle Parents at: Capemaycountyherald.com

Parents of school-aged children should be alert for signs of mold contamination in the school building. Look for signs of black mold staining areas of the ceiling or walls, especially in bathrooms and basements. Be alert to the musty odor of mildew in carpeted areas, coat closets, and gymnasiums, which might indicate hidden mold. Look for evidence of water damage or water leaks anywhere in the building.

Older school buildings are more likely to have damage that might result in mold. School mobile units or portable classrooms are often less protected against the elements and may be more susceptible to water damage and resultant mold. School buildings that have withstood tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, or other natural disastersshould be closely inspected for water damage and mold.

If your school-aged child has these symptoms, ask him or her whether the symptoms get worse after they arrive at school and better when they return home. Notice whether symptoms improve during school vacations or holidays away from the school building. If symptoms are serious or resulting in the child missing school, talk to your physician about the possibility of mold allergies.

And because of the spores’ growth, the scheduled renovation of the structure’s interior cannot be started. That is, until the mold issue is resolved.

Specifically, the said mold infestation was found in the basement of the retired library. The problem is that even the city is unaware of the mold damage and if it is toxic or not, according to City Administrator Neal Niedfeldt. And when asked about the amount needed for mold removal, he refused to theorize until more detail about the problem is obtained.

However, despite the interior problems, renovations on the exterior of the building are to push through as scheduled. And that will already start next work.

Read more about Mold Infests Carnegie Building

=========================

Major construction is set to begin on the exterior of the Carnegie building in Beatrice next week, but work on the interior will not begin until a mold situation is resolved.

Bockmann Inc. Facility and Environmental Solutions has been hired to remove the mold, which is in the basement of the retired library.

City Administrator Neal Niedfeldt said Friday morning the city is currently unaware of the amount of mold damage, or if it’s toxic.

“As far as the inside of the building, we’re still working through mold problems in the basement,” Niedfeldt said. “It’s visible on some of the walls and ceilings so they’re going to determine how that needs to be removed.

“If they determine some of the basement walls or trim has to be removed, that means the actual contractor for the project wouldn’t have to do that work.”

=========================

=========================

Basement is one of the most-prone areas to mold growth. The reason is that it is where leaks often are. And if those leaks and the mold infestation is not properly addressed in the soonest possible time, the problem could go beyond the basement and could even pose serious damage to yours and other people’s health.

And so to avoid the worst that mold infestation can bring, immediate remediation must be implemented as soon as it is spotted. Nonetheless, you must make sure that the mold removal must be safe apart from effective. To do that, you will need the help of Molderizer.

Made of 100 percent organic ingredients, Molderizer can kill mold effectively without giving off any risk to health.

However, the cause of their deaths could have been determined wrongly according to a report. Instead of pneumonia, anemia and an excess of prescription drugs for Brittany and pneumonia and anemia for her husband, it’s said that they could have died because of toxic mold.

Because of this recent progress to Brittany’s death, her mother, Sharon Murphy filed a suit against the attorneys who represented her in the suit contra the builders of the house where the actress died. The said reason for the lawsuit is that the lawyers never told her about the possible wrongful death of her daughter.

However, sources said that Sharon Murphy did not believe that her daughter died of toxic mold despite the fact that issues about it had come up before. Still, the law firm had a duty to advise or inform Sharon that she maybe having a wrongful death claim, the suit alleges.

========================

The mother of Brittany Murphy has filed a lawsuit against the attorneys that represented her in a suit against the builders of the home where the actress died, claiming the lawyers never told her about a possible wrongful death suit due to mold in the house.

The suit by Sharon Murphy in Los Angeles Superior Court comes nearly two years after the Dec. 20, 2009 death of Brittany Murphy, which was followed by the May 2010 death of Brittany’s husband Simon Monjack. Sharon Murphy apparently did not become convinced that toxic mold was a cause in the death of her daughter and son-in-law until this past summer, when she was in the process of selling the house in the Hollywood Hills.

In fact, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that while the issue of toxic mold had come up previously, Sharon Murphy did not believe at the time her 32-year-old daughter or 39-year-old son-in-law died that mold was a cause of death.
